What Is CAM Printing?
CAM printing — short for Computer-Aided Manufacturing printing — is the process of creating highly detailed 3D wax models from digital jewelry designs. These wax models are then used in the lost wax casting process to produce final gold, silver, or platinum pieces.
Unlike traditional hand-carving, CAM printing produces perfectly consistent results every time. A ring designed on a computer screen becomes a physical wax model accurate to 0.025mm — far more precise than any human hand can achieve.
How CAM Printing Works
The CAM printing process at Saqlain Bullion follows four key steps:
-
Submit Your Design — Send us your 3D file (STL, OBJ, or 3DM) via WhatsApp or email. If you only have a sketch, our team can help you convert it to a 3D model.
-
3D Wax Printing — Your design is printed layer by layer using a high-resolution wax printer. Each layer is just 16 microns thick, capturing every fine detail of your design.
-
Quality Inspection — Every printed piece is inspected under magnification to ensure surface quality, dimensional accuracy, and structural integrity.
-
Ready for Casting — The finished wax model is ready for the lost wax casting process. We can also handle casting in-house if needed.
Why Jewelers Choose CAM Printing Over Hand Carving
| Feature | CAM Printing | Hand Carving |
|---|---|---|
| Precision | 0.025mm accuracy | 0.5mm at best |
| Consistency | Identical copies every time | Slight variations |
| Speed | 24-hour turnaround | Days to weeks |
| Complex designs | No geometry limits | Skill-dependent |
| Cost per piece | Lower at scale | Higher labor |
| Modifications | Edit file, reprint | Start over |
For jewelers producing collections, engagement rings, or custom orders, CAM printing eliminates the guesswork and significantly reduces production time.
What Types of Jewelry Can Be CAM Printed?
CAM printing handles virtually any jewelry design, including:
- Rings — engagement rings, wedding bands, signet rings, cocktail rings
- Pendants — religious medallions, name pendants, geometric designs
- Earrings — studs, drops, chandeliers, hoops with detailing
- Bracelets — bangles, chain links, cuff designs
- Brooches — ornamental pins with fine filigree work
- Custom pieces — one-of-a-kind designs for special orders

CAM Printing vs 3D Printing — What's the Difference?
People often confuse CAM printing with consumer 3D printing. Here's the key difference:
- Consumer 3D printing (FDM/SLA) uses plastic or resin. The models can't be directly cast.
- CAM printing uses castable wax specifically formulated for the lost wax process. The wax burns out cleanly during casting, leaving zero ash residue.
If you bring a resin 3D print to a casting workshop, it will likely fail. CAM-printed wax is purpose-built for jewelry production.
